Rice Cereal for One Month Old?
I always though giving cereal to a baby under three months old was not a very good idea. However, my son was eating 50+ ounces of formula per twenty four hour period. The pediatrician suggested cereal in his case because consuming more than 32 oz of formula per day is not good for a baby at any age. Moreover, typical one-month olds eat 26 ounces so my baby is wanting double the typical amount. So now at the doctor's advice, I'm feeding him rice cereal. However, he's still super hungry--What do you think? What in the world could be causing my child to want so much food? Neither me or my husband are anywhere near fat or even chuncky and being overweight doesn't run in either of our families? Could something be taking my baby's nutrition from him (parasite or something?)?? He goes to the dr. Friday so I hope to get some answers then...

- You need a new doctor. and to add: "Could something be taking my baby's nutrition from him?" - believe it or not, it is natures way to breastfeed. your baby is NATURALLY needing breastmilk, that has 100+ more nutrients than formula. if you're worried about his nutrients dont give him cereal, theres no nutrients in it! .
- I agree with the other person. You need a new doctor. There could be something very wrong if your child is eating that much and is still always hungry. Is he gaining weight properly? Is he gaining too much? Too little?
- Rice Cereal won't hurt him. It actually helps with acid reflux. He does seem to be eating alot for a one month old though. I would definately ask the doctor about it. Could just be a growth spurt and he might slow down. Whether you and your husband are overweight or not I don't think that would affect your little one:) Good Luck.
- I wouldn't give him any if it were me because it just is not right. His digestive track is not yet developed enough to break down things like that. I think it is best if you stick to whatever is closest to natural. Did you try a few ounces of water between meal times?
- Babies will eat any time it offered to him. Give him a pacifier to satisfy his sucking sensation. Babies natuarlly want to suck. He will take the bottle even when not really hungry just so he can suck. You may wanna try. I dont know i hope this helps. But you really wanna avoid over feeding him cuz he will just throw it up. if he gets to full.
- This is really not normal. I am glad you are going to the doctor. make sure they check a stool sample and a urine sample [You can press the dipstick into a very wet diaper.] Is you baby gaining or losing weight ? A one month old is not physically ready to accept solids of any kind. After a normal amount of formula , try giving him a pacifier and see how that goes. I'd change doctors too. Good luck. let us know what happens.
- you might be overfeeding your baby just cause he cries doesn't mean hes hungry....my baby will turn 5 mo this sept 17 he eats at the most 28 oz & hes just now getting started on rice cereal....so its strange to hear this story but go with what the docter says...but i did have a stepsis she was a 13pd baby eating regular food early but i never heard so much when it comes to y/story...i hope you have a great docter
- Is he hungry or does he just want to suck all the time? I think it is very unlikely he needs cereal at 1 month old. You didn't say how big he was when he was born, if he was very large (10+lbs) then he will be very hungry. I would try him with a dummy (pacifier, in the US, I think). They aren't terrible unless you allow 3 year olds to walk around with them in their mouths all the time. Also remember if it has been hot he could be thirsty, if he is he will drink more formula and then want more because it won't really quench his thirst. So try boiled water as well.
- Your not supposed to give then cereal until they are 5 months because of allergies. I would get a second opinion and a new doctor. Not to say yours does not know what he or she is talking about but I have never heard that. And why is your son eating 50+ oz? That seems like ALOT. My daughter is 9 months and she doesn't even drink near to that much a day. Maybe switch to a different formula? Are you sure he is hungrey and you are not just feeding him all the time? Like I said see another doctor. It could be something else causing your baby not to be filling up..calorie breakdown. Their are certain problems out their that some babys have. Only a doctor can really do the proper test to find out though. Good luck
- I think you should go find a specialist. My daughter eats constnatly and she's at around 40oz, at 4 months. For a 1 month old to eat 50 oz is EXTREMELY uncommon and perhaps cause for concern. Have you tried a soy formula? Perhaps his body is not able to process the lactose in regular formula and thus his constant hunger. Something's up though. obesity has nothing to do with THIS kind of hunger.
- This sounds like child abuse. You need a new doctor ASAP.
- He's too young to know when he's full giving him that much he's probably stuffed and uncomfortable so he's crying. give him a pacifier or walk around the room or swaddle him its a major change in his environment so hes adapting. Don't give him solids until hes three months+ which is contributing to his discomfort. AND change doctors he shouldn't advised you that shame shame
