5 month old vomiting occasionally after starting rice cereal and has a cold?

12-27-07 daughter has appt with doctor, gets rotovirus vaccine, dr. recommends we start rice cereal 12-28-07 start rice cereal 12-29-07 notice daughter coughing, also notice cold symptoms in myself 12-30-07 take her temp, has a low grade temp of 99.5 and a runny nose 1-01-08 vomits after eating rice cereal, still running low grade temp and really runny nose 1-3-08 vomits twice, once after rice cereal, another after evening feeding 1-4-08 vomits once after rice cereal she eats rice cereal twice a day, and like i said she has a cold. i'm just wondering if the vomiting could be because of the drainage from her nose making her stomach hurt because that happened to me a lot as a kid. or if maybe she is having some sort of reaction to rice cereal. she is breastfed only, no formula. she also saw the doctor on 1-2-08 and i told them about her throwing up the night before and having a temp and they said it wasnt a big deal. anyone else dealt with something like this?

  1. If it were me, i would hold off on the rice cereal for a few days and see if she quits vomiting. If she does, try cereal again, if she vomits, consult your doc and tell him what you did. If she doesnt, its probably just the nose drainage, my son did the same stuff almost everytime we tried a new food. but he is fine now with no allergies and eats everything in his sight! :)
  2. when i took my twins to get their 2 month shots, Abby came down with a bad cold the very next day. they weren't on rice cereal yet, just formula, but she started throwing up later that day after eating. you need to stop feeding the rice cereal until her cold and vomiting clears up. also, try cutting back (just a little) on feedings (if she will allow it). my pharmasist told me to take some flat coke (no fizz) and feed her a little of it at a time. she drank about 2 oz of it in a 4-6 hour period (i don't remember exactly how long it took, it happened 2 months ago). the flat coke helped to settle her tummy and she stopped vomiting. also, when we fed her, we gave her about 1 oz to eat, then burped her, then repeated process till she ate at least 3 oz and was able to keep it down. that helped out alot, too. if you fear that she is not getting enough fluid in her (due to excessive vomiting) try giving her some Pedialite, too. oh, and our daughter had a low grade fever of 100.2 and were told that it wasn't anything to worry about until it was at least 100.4.
  3. http://children.webmd.com/tc/pyloric-stenosis-topic-overview My son had pyloric stenosis. He would vomit after almost every feeding, and our Dr. said that it may be nothing, and monitor his intake. Well, my mother is a RN and said that I was right, it was Pyloric Stenosis, and he wasn't getting enough nutrients or fluids. We had to take him to the emergency room and then they transferred him to a children's hospital where they did a routine surgery. He could have died from that, but now 3 years later, he's as smart and healthy as kids older than him. So, check out that link above and good luck.
  4. It could be the drainage, or a flu with an upset stomach. It could also be though that rice cereal has a very slimy consistency. If it is in her mouth and throat it may just ad to the mucus that is already there. Alot of babies will cough, get mucus stuck in there throat and not be able to catch there breath. That triggers the gauge reflex and up comes the food and clears the throat. I would hold off on the cereal until the cold goes away. Good luck.
  5. This information is a direct quote from the website listed below. They say it so much better than I can. While it contradicts the current practices of the medical field...If you ask a doctor about the Amylase they just brush you off and don't even address the question. This tells me that they know they are wrong but that is what they are supposed to tell you. I would hold of on cereal. I started my baby directly onto veggies and fruits. I started off diluting it with the formula he drinks...instead of rice cereal. I will hold off on grains until I feel he needs them. "Finally, respect the tiny, still-developing digestive system of your infant. Babies have limited enzyme production, which is necessary for the digestion of foods. In fact, it takes up to 28 months, just around the time when molar teeth are fully developed, for the big-gun carbohydrate enzymes (namely amylase) to fully kick into gear. Foods like cereals, grains and breads are very challenging for little ones to digest. Thus, these foods should be some of the last to be introduced. (One carbohydrate enzyme a baby’s small intestine does produce is lactase, for the digestion of lactose in milk.1)"
  6. Is she vomiting up everything she ate? Spit up still happens when eating formula but it looks more like vomit since it has a thicker consistency. I would lay off the cereals for a couple days as baby is still recovering from the shots and with the cold she may not feel like eating. When you do reintroduce them, mix the cereal with breast milk and make it very very runny, so she is drinking it off the spoon. Once she gets the hang of that and has no problems holding it down, then you can increase the consistency slowly until it looks more like a cream of rice consistency. If she still has issues you may want to try an organic rice cereal to make sure it's not some of the additives causing an issue since rice is generally considered to be one of the easiest foods to digest. Good luck!
