If a baby takes rice cereal in a bottle should he be eating less?

As a last resort for our son (who is 7m) has reflux as well as oral issues his GI Dr suggested trying rice cereal 1tablespoon to each 2oz breast milk/formula. he is getting on average 12-15 tablespoons of cereal a day. We hope to eventually cut back. I am asking since he still seems to want the same amount of liquids. and is gaining quicker. I've also read about babies who take cereal in a bottle can't always tell they are full since they want to keep drinking or something along those lines. before anyone says he should have it in his bottle please keep in mind he is actually eating better and chokes less with his feeding being thicker

  1. He still wants the same amount of liquids because he still NEEDS them. Also at 7 months old, he should be getting solid foods anyway, so that may be the reason for him not changing his intake of liquids. With cereal in his bottle, it also doesn't quench his thirst as much, since it is more like a solid. That is great that the cereal is helping him not choke......Have they done a swallow study to make sure that he doesn't have dysphagia? It is common with children who have severe reflux. Don't worry about him gaining weight quicker......it will slow down the more mobile he becomes........I wouldn't recommend cutting down without a swallow study first.
  2. Sounds like your are just doing fine there, you have to do what the baby can tolerate, just make sure he gets enough fluids and that shouldn't be too hard. You can be giving him finger foods that are soft at this age. Like pieces of canned fruit, macaroni, mashed potatoes, soft meats, anything.
